2009 – 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall
2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. These events triggered drastic changes around the world, marking the end of the Cold War and of the division of Europe.
Perspectives – A changing Berlin
On 28 January 2009 on Potsdamer Platz a red information box opened up the theme year 2009. As central drop-in centre it is starting point for the tour to the different locations of Berlin's change. A second, mobile information box is accompanied by a highly visible, red arrow which for a short period turns the spotlight onto the respective site.
The first locations are examples of numerous other sites which will be added during the course of 2009 by Berlin partners. Those locations can be experienced by a travelling exhibition, playful elements and stories people and places tell in the course of guided tours which offer exceptional insights and perspectives.

Peaceful Revolution 1989/90 – Open-Air Exhibition
7 May to 14 November 2009 at Alexanderplatz
The exhibition tells the story of the Peaceful Revolution and its main participants. In fascinating pictures it shows how complex this process developed and that its outcome was neither inevitable nor self-evident. The exhibition is open twenty-four-seven; free entry.
A project by Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft e.V. in collaboration with Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH; sponsored by Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin and the Federal Government's representatives for culture and media.
7 to 9 November – Festival of Freedom
The fall of the Berlin Wall – a new beginning in Germany and Europe – will be celebrated with a huge 'Festival of Freedom' on both sides of the Brandenburg Gate. Accompanied by guests from around the world, with contemporary witnesses as well as public personalities, Berliners will celebrate this unforgettable event in history. The highlight of this event is the multimedia staging of the symbolic fall of the Wall using a 'domino effect'. Scores of young people are involved in the preparations for this historic event. They are designing oversized stones which on this day, together with prominent artists, cultural figures and politicians, they will cause to come tumbling down.
Subject to alterations.
