2010 – 20 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Peaceful Revolution 1989/90 – Open-Air Exhibition
7 May 2009 to 3 October 2010 at Alexanderplatz

The exhibition told the story of the Peaceful Revolution and its main participants. In fascinating pictures it showed how this complex process developed and that its outcome was neither inevitable nor self-evident. The exhibition was open twenty-four hours a day with free entry.

It is a project by Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft e.V. in collaboration with Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH; sponsored by Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin and the Federal Government's representatives for culture and media.

2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. These events triggered drastic changes around the world, marking the end of the Cold War and of the division of Europe. For further information visit: revolution89.de and Havemann-Gesellschaft.de.

Perspectives – A changing Berlin
On 28 January 2009 in Potsdamer Platz a red information box opened the anniversary year. This central drop-in centre formed the starting point for a tour encompassing different key locations of change across the city. A second, mobile information box was accompanied by a highly visible, red arrow which for a short period turned the spotlight onto the respective site.
Numerous other sites were added during the course of 2009 by Berlin partners. The course of guided tours involved an informative talk, a travelling exhibition, interesting stories and anecdotes, offering exceptional insights and new perspectives.

7 to 9 November – Festival of Freedom
The fall of the Berlin Wall – a new beginning in Germany and Europe – was  celebrated with a huge 'Festival of Freedom' on both sides of the Brandenburg Gate. Accompanied by guests from around the world, contemporary witnesses and public personalities, Berliners will celebrate this unforgettable event in history. The highlight of this event is the multimedia staging of the symbolic fall of the Wall using a 'domino effect'. Scores of young people were involved in the preparation of this historic event, designing and creating blocks together with prominent artists, cultural figures and politicians, which were then triumphantly toppled
