Ostkreuzschule: Birte Kaufmann, o.T., 2011

19th of October until 25th of November 2012

For the fifth time this upcoming year the major German photo festival will take place: the European Month of Photography Berlin. Every two years since 2004 about 100 institutions – among it museums, cultural institutions, galleries, embassies, representations of the state, photo schools and project rooms – present numerous exhibitions and events referring to historical and contemporary photography in an international setting. The MdF Berlin belongs to the network of European photo festivals of cities like Bratislava, Ljubljana, Luxemburg, Paris and Vienna. The result of this collaboration is a corporately planned exhibition of contemporary European photography which is shown in the sister cities and the extension of the European network itself.

Information:

Since February 15, 2012 Katia Reich is the new curator of the 5th European Month of Photography Berlin.

This year’s deadline for applications was the 16th of March, 12:00 p.m.

The jury, led by Katia Reich, will meet at the end of March. It consists of Florian Ebner (Museum für Photographie Braunschweig e.V.), Matthias Harder (Helmut Newton Foundation), Felix Hoffmann (C/O Berlin), Gereon Sievernich (Martin-Gropius-Bau) and Christiane Stahl (Alfred Erhardt Stiftung).

Theme 2012: The View Of The Other

In the era of almost unlimited mobility of mankind, goods and commodities “the own and the unfamiliar” are hardly separable nowadays and dependent on the viewer’s standpoint. People are modern nomads out of political, economic and social reasons and are forced to altercate with the new, the different and the own identity. Briefly: We live in an era of permanent migration. The view on the other, his or her view on us and the reflection across are part of the daily perception, documentation and instrumentalisation. Different media and their channels, beyond them social networks, support this process: unfiltered and in real-time people produce, distribute, manipulate and consume images in any form and provide a contribution to the documentary, artistic and political characterization of the world.

In 2012 the MdF Berlin puts the main emphasis on phenomena like the views on change, the views on others but also the view of the others on us.

Through the works of the participating photographers a “dialogue of views” shall develop and therewith an image of our present societies. The role of historical images of “the own and the unfamiliar” in this acquisition may also be part of the presentations.

Festival catalogue

In 2012, just like in the past years, a detailed festival catalogue will be published, presenting all exhibitions of the involved partners. For the first time the publication will also be available in English. It can be purchased in all participating institutions as well as at Kulturprojekte Berlin at the price of 7,50 € starting from the middle of October.

Terms of participation

Museums, cultural institutions and galleries from Berlin and Potsdam that concern themselves professionally with photography may participate in the MdF Berlin. Unfortunately individual photographers cannot be admitted.
